What Can Dental Crowns Do?

Dental crowns cover damaged teeth to protect them from further harm. This allows for the covered tooth and its root to be preserved, which can help prevent the oral health issues that come with tooth loss.

Dental crowns can:

  • Restore cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Protect teeth from infection
  • Support weakened, decayed teeth
  • Cover a misshapen or discolored tooth
  • Affix a dental bridge
  • Replace a lost tooth as part of an implant

Types of Crowns

Many types of dental crowns are available. During your consultation, Dr. Scavuzzo will perform a thorough dental examination. He'll also talk to you about your goals. Based on these, he'll recommend the best type of crown to meet your oral health and aesthetic needs.

Common types of dental crowns include:

  • Stainless steel: Stainless steel crowns are typically used as a temporary measure to protect a tooth or filling while a permanent crown is being fabricated from other material. They can also be used as permanent crowns for children who still have their baby teeth.
  • Metals: Metal crowns are usually made from alloys that are high in gold, platinum, or base metals such as cobalt, nickel, and chromium. These crowns are extremely durable and can withstand your biting and chewing forces well enough to last a long time. They are typically used on back teeth such as molars, where their metallic appearance is hidden deep in your mouth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal: These crowns consist of a metal base with a porcelain overlay. Their colors can be matched to your surrounding natural teeth. However, they are less durable than metal crowns, and the metal underlay can sometimes show through the porcelain outer layer.
  • All-porcelain: All-porcelain crowns are more durable than porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns and are best able to match the color of your natural teeth. They are often used for front teeth and other, more visible teeth.

Dental Crown Procedure

When you come in for your dental crown appointment, Dr. Scavuzzo will prepare your tooth and remove any damaged or decaying portions to give the crown a strong base to sit on. Then, he'll make an impression of your teeth to create a mold for the crown.

The crown will be fabricated in a dental lab based upon the mold that Dr. Scavuzzo sends them. It will be customized to fit your mouth and, if it's porcelain, to match the color of your surrounding teeth.

When your crown is ready, Dr. Scavuzzo will attach it during a separate visit. He'll first put in on your tooth and have you bite to test its fit, then attach it permanently using dental cement.
